A viral image claims Pete Hegseth made a bombshell resignation announcement — but the article behind it names nobody at all, and no such resignation has happened. What is real is a storm around the Pentagon chief: calls for his resignation and even impeachment talk have been building for months, and the image appears to have turned that pressure into a false announcement.
On one side are the critics. Republican Representative Thomas Massie introduced articles of impeachment accusing Hegseth of continuing military operations against Iran without congressional authorization, in violation of the War Powers Resolution — allegations that have not been adjudicated, and which the Pentagon has defended against. Democrats, including House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, have said President Trump should remove Hegseth, and plan to seek his dismissal if they regain the House majority in the November midterm elections.
The pressure intensified after Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned on 31 August after months of reported tensions with Hegseth, and after a Pentagon Inspector General report found Hegseth had shared classified operational details over an unsecured personal group chat. Critics such as Representative Sara Jacobs accused him of undermining military readiness and politicizing the armed forces, and demanded he resign.
Hegseth himself, however, has denied the resignation rumors and vowed to remain in office until the end of President Trump’s term. So the “bombshell announcement” in the viral image is not a resignation at all — it is a controversy that continues, with his critics demanding he go and Hegseth insisting he is staying.
