General Hospital stunned fans twice last week when its decades-long mafia kingpins, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), decided they were leaving their life of crime behind and going legit. After 33 years of Sonny in the mob and 30 years of Jason as his right-hand man, those decisions sent shockwaves through the fandom, as the 63-year-old ABC soap is about to undergo a seismic shift, one that Maurice Benard looks forward to.

While many fans have celebrated the change, others have wondered if GH will grow stale and boring with the mob not taking up so much of the plot. Could Sonny and Jason actually become…ordinary? When one fan worried that GH could become like other soaps that focus more on business and corporate warfare, Benard stepped in and defended the soap’s decision to change directions after all these years.
“There’s nothing wrong with doing another profession or change as long as both characters still have power,” Benard wrote on X. “And that is the plan I can tell you right now what they have planned in the future is absolutely beautiful.”
When Sonny and Jason have toyed with leaving the mob before, they usually deemed it impossible because it’s so hard to extricate oneself from that kind of world. Indeed, Sonny has many enemies, including Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota), who has not been found guilty and sent away yet. Could Sidwell interfere with Sonny and Jason’s plans?

Sonny and Jason’s decision also affects their families, as Jason told Sonny he could no longer work for him so he could be a better father to teenage Danny (Asher Antonyzyn). If Sonny starts a new legit business, he could ask Jason to be his partner. Whatever Sonny does, Benard assures fans that Justine (Nazneen Contractor) will remain a part of his life. “I just had some fun great scenes with her later,” he wrote, giving yet another tease for what’s ahead.
