In Toowoomba, Queensland, Jeni and Ray Bonell are known as Australia’s biggest family, raising 16 children whose ages range from 10 to 35. Their story has drawn attention not only for the size of the family, but for a marriage that has now lasted 30 years.
The couple did not start out agreeing on family size. Jeni once said she never wanted children, while Ray hoped for at least four. Over time their family grew far beyond either expectation, and they now describe their household as busy, noisy and full of life.
Running such a household takes serious organisation. The family spends around $600 a week on groceries, including about 50 litres of milk, and children aged eight and older take part in a chore roster that keeps the house running.
Amid the chaos, the couple say they have protected time for each other, choosing not to spend their evenings arguing over small things. Their message, as shared in the coverage, is simple: a big family works when the marriage at its centre is looked after too.
