Beloved Television Producer Passes Away at 52 — Ellen DeGeneres Shares an Emotional Tribute to Her Longtime Friend

Ellen DeGeneres Breaks Down in Tears After Sudden Death of Beloved Producer Matthew Wright at 52 — Their Final Reunion Makes the News Even More Heartbreaking

The man at the center of the heartbreaking news was Matthew “Matt” Wright, a longtime television producer who spent 16 years working behind the scenes on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Wright died on October 30, 2026, at the age of 52, while working remotely in Los Angeles. His family described his death as an “unfathomable tragedy.” No official cause of death had been publicly disclosed.

What made the news especially painful was that Matt had visited former colleagues just hours before his death.

On Thursday, October 29, he stopped by the set of The Jennifer Hudson Show during its Halloween taping. There, he reunited with Andy Lassner, another longtime producer from the Ellen show who now works on Jennifer Hudson’s program.

Lassner later shared photographs from their reunion, explaining that they had been taken on Thursday.

“A few hours later, he was gone,” Lassner wrote.

He described Matt as a brilliant producer and an even better human being. He also remembered how deeply Matt cared for his mother, frequently traveling between Los Angeles and New York to spend time with her before she died.

His tribute continued with an emotional message about Matt’s husband, Justin, and the family and friends now struggling with his loss.

When Ellen DeGeneres learned of his passing, she also shared an emotional video on November 2. Sitting outdoors, visibly struggling to hold back tears, she spoke about the man who had been such an important part of her professional life.

She remembered him as funny, intelligent, kind, and someone who constantly found ways to make her laugh.

“Everyone loved him. I loved him. And it’s just shocking,” she said.

Ellen also revealed that the two had recently been planning to work together on a new project. They were supposed to begin collaborating soon, making his unexpected death even more difficult to accept.

She described Matt as the glue that held the entire Ellen show family together.

During his 16 years on the program, from 2006 until its conclusion in 2022, Wright became much more than a behind-the-scenes employee. He frequently appeared in comedy segments and was a familiar face to viewers who followed the show.

His colleagues remembered him not only for his professional talent but also for the friendships and laughter he brought into their lives.

Ellen also recalled his close friendship with Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the beloved DJ and dancer from her show who died in 2022. Through tears, she imagined the two friends reunited, dancing and laughing together.

Meanwhile, Matt’s family faced another painful challenge. His husband, father, sister, and niece were living in New York, while he had died in California.

A fundraising campaign was established to help bring his body home, cover funeral expenses, and arrange a memorial service. The family explained that both Matt and his husband had recently been laid off, making the unexpected costs especially difficult.

The fundraiser also stated that any additional money raised would be placed in a trust for Matt’s niece, Sami, whom he deeply loved.

The response from former colleagues and supporters was overwhelming. Donations poured in from people who wanted to help his family during an incredibly difficult time. Ellen also contributed $5,000 to the fundraiser.

Jennifer Hudson and other members of the television community shared their condolences, remembering the impact Matt had made on their lives and careers.

For those who saw him on October 29, the photographs from that Halloween taping will now carry a meaning nobody could have anticipated.

They were not simply pictures of old colleagues catching up. They captured one final reunion with a friend they believed they would see again.

Sometimes, the people who bring the most laughter into our lives leave behind the deepest silence when they’re gone.

Matthew Wright may have worked behind the cameras, but the friendships he created and the happiness he brought to others made him unforgettable. ❤️
